Summary:

This is the moment when Haley, Sam and Andy find Eliza. Haley had been trying to track her down for the whole day and he finally spotted her. Exhausted, she runs for her and her child's life and attempts to cross the icy river. She makes it across safely away from Haley.

Response:

I can see why this book was so popular back then, it has all the elements of a good story needs. This was such an intense part of the story, It's really like the modern day car chase. I don't know if one exists, but it would be interesting to see a modern day movie of Uncle Tom's Cabin to see if they portray it better. The above quote caught my attention because Stowe compares the people to animals. Usually, people hunt deers or have their dogs chase after them, but in this scene people are hunting people. The quote gives the scene a barbaric feel. It also shows the savageness of Haley who is hunting her down like an animal. This image gives me the chills because people shouldn't be hunting people. It almost reminds me the story about the man who had hunted every animal in the world he decides to hunt humans. Last week when we read Jacobs, it almost sounded like her story was a novel and Stowe's novel sounds like it could be non fiction. I think this shows the accuracy of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and that fiction or not, terrible things like the events in the book happened all the time.
